Consultation
When adults are concerned about a young person, it can be really helpful to talk through the worries and brainstorm strategies or plan an appropriate course of action. While there is typically a waiting list for individual assessments, a consultation can usually be offered within a few days and so they are useful when parents/teachers would like prompt access to psychological advice.
During the sessions Dr Hutton uses her wealth of experience and training to explain possible causes for issues and to suggest ways that the worries could be addressed. Frequently, the process of talking the problem through, can help to highlight the best course of action. These sessions are useful to brainstorm strategies for parents who are struggling to understand/manage their child’s behaviour or their difficulties with learning. In addition, consultations can be useful to brainstorm ideas with class teachers, SENCos or other school staff.
Often adults leave consultations with a range of strategies that they can apply, without the need for further psychological intervention. However, in some cases, the consultation might conclude that an individual educational psychology assessment would be appropriate or Dr Hutton may recommend other professional involvement such as an occupational therapist or speech and language therapist.
The minimum charge is £50 for a 30 minute session, but discussions typically last around 60 minutes. They are charged at £25 per 15 minutes, hence, £100 per hour. Consultations can be conducted in person or online.
A report is not usually written following a consultation. It is the responsibility of the parents or teachers attending the session to take note of any details they wish to record.

Many thanks for your session yesterday. It was really informative, useful and – amazingly – you made it enjoyable. That was quite a feat given the subject matter that we requested, but it was a very skilled presentation. Thank you!’ Senior Educational Psychologist
